Headaches With Screen Use? When to Consider a Neurolens Evaluation

A headache that appears during computer work can make an ordinary day feel exhausting. You might notice pressure around your eyes after reading, discomfort during video meetings, or symptoms that build as near tasks continue. At the office of Kenneth D. Boltz, O.D., in Dublin, Ohio, we take these concerns seriously while recognizing that screen-related headaches can have several different causes. A Neurolens evaluation may be worth discussing, but it begins with understanding your symptoms rather than assuming one explanation.

Why Screen-Related Headaches Have Different Causes

Extended screen use often combines sustained near focus, limited blinking, and demanding visual tasks. An outdated glasses prescription or uncorrected vision problem can contribute to strain. Dry eye may cause irritation and fluctuating clarity. Some people experience difficulty coordinating their eyes for near work, while others have migraines or medical conditions unrelated to eye alignment.

The timing of a headache alone does not establish binocular vision dysfunction. Even when symptoms consistently occur at a desk, we need to consider your vision, eye health, general health history, and the nature of the discomfort before discussing possible solutions.

What a Neurolens Evaluation May Involve

We begin by listening. We want to know when headaches start, how long they last, what tasks bring them on, and whether you also experience blurry or double vision. A general eye health assessment and refraction help us check whether your current prescription is suitable and whether other eye conditions may be contributing.

When indicated, we also evaluate how your eyes align and work together at near and distance. The particular tests depend on your findings and symptoms. This helps us determine whether a binocular coordination issue might be part of the picture or whether you need additional evaluation elsewhere.

When Neurolens Could Be Considered

Neurolens is a prescription lens option designed for selected binocular alignment needs. Its contoured-prism design changes the amount of prism across the lens to address differing visual demands. That does not make it the right choice for everyone who gets headaches.

If our examination identifies findings that may make Neurolens appropriate, we can discuss how it fits into your overall care, what it may or may not address, and other relevant options. We do not assume that prism is necessary for every patient or that any lens can eliminate every headache. Our priority is matching recommendations to the individual assessment.

What to Track Before Your Visit

A few notes can make your discussion more productive. Bring or record:

  • When headaches begin, how frequently they occur, and how they change.
  • The activities involved, including screens, reading, driving, or switching focus.
  • Blurry vision, double vision, dry eye symptoms, or other accompanying changes.
  • Whether breaks, lighting, or adjustments to your workspace affect discomfort.
  • Your current glasses or contact lens prescription and any recent changes.
  • Relevant medications, health history, and migraine treatment or guidance from your medical provider.

Supporting Comfort and Knowing When to Seek Help

Short breaks, a comfortable screen distance, appropriate lighting, and remembering to blink may ease some screen-related discomfort. These strategies can support everyday comfort, but they do not replace an eye examination or evaluation of persistent headaches. Let us know which workspace changes help and which symptoms persist.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive or worst-ever headache, weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, a headache after a head injury, or severe eye pain or redness accompanied by vision changes. Discuss recurrent or changing headaches with your medical provider, even if you suspect screen use plays a role.

If screen-related discomfort is interfering with your work or reading, contact Kenneth D. Boltz, O.D. in Dublin, Ohio, at (614) 763-5775 to schedule an individualized eye and Neurolens evaluation.
